Reason #10: It really is in our DNA
WHEN: February through November. Racing: April - November
WHERE: 1245 Pine Tree Road, Alton, VA
Seriously, racing, it's in our DNA. Halifax County is home to two racetracks, including the internationally-acclaimed Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton. The course was recently chosen as the sixth-best road course in North America by Car and Driver Magazine. VIR is a multi-purpose road course offering professional and amateur auto and motorcycle racing, as well as a wide range of track events. Each year, the venue draws tens of thousands of spectators for some of the best road racing in the country. Its uphill Esses and sharp elevation changes not only make it a fan and driver favorite but have also established it as a prominent testing facility for the automotive industry.
While racing is the heart of the VIR, the 1,300-acre property is so much more. America's first true "motorsport resort," it is an entire vacation destination with a number of onsite hotel and lodging options. Within the property's rolling hills and miles of lush forest, guests can enjoy amenities such as the exclusive Driver's Club, karting, off-road racing, skeet shooting, pistol and rifle ranges, skid pad, dining options, a spa, and more.
VIR is also the home of 3-Gun Nation's Nationals and Shooting Expo which is held in November.
VICTORY LAP: Did you know that VIR has a karting? Locals looking for a fun adventure, VIR Karting just may become your new favorite thing. Not in the mood for speed, the Oak Tree Spa offers a menu of relaxing and rejuvenating services. Hungry? Oak Tree Tavern offers a fine dining experience and if you're not feeling so fancy, Connie's Pub is just the place to kick back and relax over pints and burgers.
