Opioid Awareness A Day of Hope and Education

Description

The Opioid Awareness Day of Hope and Education is a community event dedicated to bringing together individuals, families, service providers, and advocates to raise awareness about substance use disorder, prevent overdose deaths, and promote recovery in Halifax County and across Southside Virginia.

Hosted by Recovering Hands in collaboration with Engaging Halifax and sponsored by Virginia Tech, Americorps and the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the event will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Constitution Square, 100 Main Street, South Boston, Virginia.

This day is designed to educate, inspire, and connect the community through:

  • Overdose prevention education
  • Naloxone (Narcan) training
  • Fentanyl test strip distribution and information
  • Recovery resources and community organizations
  • Memorial tributes honoring lives lost to overdose
  • Speakers sharing stories of hope, resilience, and recovery
  • Family-friendly activities, including bounce houses
  • Food vendors and free water
  • Opportunities to learn how individuals and families can support recovery and save lives

The event emphasizes that addiction affects people from all walks of life and that recovery is possible. By bringing together education, remembrance, and community support, the goal is to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and provide practical tools that help prevent overdose deaths while connecting people to treatment, recovery support, and hope.

In a region that has experienced the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic, the Opioid Awareness Day of Hope and Education serves as a reminder that every life has value, every recovery journey matters, and together we can build a stronger, healthier community.
