Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail – Dan River Loop
The Dan River Loop of the Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail is in Halifax County’s eastern edge, featuring the convergence of the Dan, Banister, and Staunton Rivers into John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake). These rivers host abundant wildlife, offering fantastic opportunities for exploration and observation. Visit sites along the Dan River and upper reservoir to spot flocks of ring-billed gulls and other gull species. Scan forest edges for fox sparrows or hermit thrushes, and in colder weather, explore snow-covered marshes for rusty blackbirds. Don’t forget to look up and watch red-tailed hawks gliding overhead.
