Springfield Distillery – Handcrafted Spirits and Traditions

If you’re a fan of handcrafted spirits and are looking for a unique experience in Halifax County, Virginia, then a visit to Springfield Distillery is a must. This family-owned distillery is nestled in the rolling hills of Halifax County, is best known for its award-winning small-batch spirits. Just a short drive from the town of Halifax, the distillery offers tours and tastings.

A Tour of Traditions

The tour begins with a brief history of the distillery, founded in 2014 and opened in 2016 by owners Kelly and James Gordon. They drew inspiration from Springfield, a historic home on the property dating back to 1842. Back then, everything was made by hand. Life was simple, not easy, and the reward was sitting on the porch with a glass of whiskey you distilled. This philosophy is evident in every corner of Springfield, from the distilling process to the craftsmanship of the buildings.

During the tour, you’ll meet Mason, Kelly’s son and the distiller and “Mash Master.” He’ll guide you through the distilling process, from milling grains to fermenting and distilling spirits. You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at the equipment, including their copper pot still.

One standout feature of Springfield Distillery is its commitment to locally sourced ingredients. Grains are grown by local farmers, and the water used in distilling comes from a nearby spring. In fact, the corn for the SCRATCH Corn Whiskey is grown on a farm across the road. Using local ingredients not only supports the local economy but also gives their spirits a distinct regional flavor.

Sip and Savor

After the tour, it’s time for the tasting. Springfield Distillery offers a variety of whiskies. Their award-winning Springfield Straight Bourbon is aged for up to two years in oak barrels, giving it a smooth finish. Another popular option is Springfield 1842 Whiskey, aged in port or wine barrels from Halifax County’s Hunting Creek Vineyards, with hints of wood and smoke. For a lighter option, SCRATCH whiskies come in flavors like berries and maple at 60 proof. If you’re not sure which spirit to try, the knowledgeable staff will guide you through the tasting and offer suggestions on how to enjoy them—whether in a cocktail or sipped neat.

The tasting room itself is another unique feature. Housed in a log cabin originally built in the 1800s, the cabin was moved to the property in 2015 with help from Barnwood Builders, a show that celebrates American craftsmanship. A recent addition has expanded the tasting room, tripling its size while preserving its rustic charm. The same craftsmanship is reflected in two rustic cabins on-site, perfect for an overnight stay just steps from the distillery.

Experience More Than Spirits

In addition to tours and tastings, Springfield Distillery hosts events year-round, including live music and food trucks. They also have a gift shop where you can buy bottles of spirits, t-shirts, hats, and other merchandise. Every Wednesday, the distillery hosts Whiskey Wednesday, a virtual event where staff teach viewers how to craft cocktails using Springfield products. Anyone can tune in and follow along from anywhere.

Whether you’re a spirits enthusiast or just looking for a fun outing with friends, Springfield Distillery is worth the visit. With its picturesque location and handcrafted spirits, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Don’t miss the chance to sit on the tasting room porch, sip a craft spirit, and savor the fruits of Kelly and her team’s hard work.
