One in the series of Halifax County Field Trips, focused on Astronomy. From stargazing at an International Dark Sky Park to astronomy lessons at a science center, students will gain a deeper understanding of the solar system.

Day 1

LOVE Signs in Halifax County VA

STOP : PICK UP YOUR ASSIGNMENT AT HALIFAX COUNTY VISITOR CENTER

Stop by the Halifax County Visitor Center to pick up your assignment! Ask our docents for recommendations to make the assignment your own. Also find a selection of local history books and crafts by local artisans.
 
Campfire at Staunton River State Park

STOP : CAMPFIRE AT STAUNTON RIVER STATE PARK

Arrive at Staunton River State Park. Meet rangers and other families at the Friday campfire while roasting s’mores. Then head out for any night programming or return to your campsite/cabin to cook dinner.
 

Day 2

STOP : SUNRISE HIKE

Wake up bright and early for a sunrise hike. Walk to the point to watch the sun rise over Bugg’s Island Lake. Cabins are located at the point, but campers will need to walk a couple of miles and should plan accordingly.
 

STOP : START YOUR DAY AT PUMPKIN AND BUGG’S

Head to downtown Halifax for pastries and/or coffee at Pumpkin and Buggs. This newly opened café offers a variety of baked goods and coffee to start your day.
 

STOP : ASTRONOMY IN THE DIGITAL DOME

Now that you’re charged for the day, head to the Danville Science Museum for The Digital Dome. The dome displays lectures on outer space from astronomers. Behold breathtaking views of our solar system without leaving your seat!
 

STOP : LUNCH AT THE BUSY BEAN

On your way back to the park, stop in downtown South Boston for lunch at the Busy Bean. This charming café serves sandwiches, salads, and desserts. Be sure to pick up some pre-packaged salads and food to snack on later! Afterwards explore the shops of Downtown South Boston or head back to the park.
 

STOP : ENJOY YOUR AFTERNOON AT THE PARK

Return to Staunton River State Park to do some exploring in the daylight. Take a hike, play disc golf, have fun at the playground, or participate in one of the park’s interpretational programs like archery, canoeing, or fishing!

STOP : STARGAZING

When the sun goes down, the stars come out! Prepare to be amazed while stargazing at an International Dark Sky certified park. Plan on visiting a weekend when astronomers from CHAOS are hosting “Stories of the Stars” and view planets through their telescopes. Or visit any weekend and reserve one of the park’s telescopes free of charge. Also find literature at the park’s visitor center containing star maps and books on astronomy.
