Historic Lodging and Inspired Attractions

Berry Hill Resort

This historic home turned resort is often cited as the best example of Southern Greek Revival architecture in the state. Guests can stay in one of the modern hotel rooms or opt for the stately suites within the mansion. The resort features dining options, recreation, and a spa; perfect for a relaxing weekend or for treating yourself.

Darby’s Tavern

Now serving pub classics, the old kitchen of the Berry Hill mansion has been turned into Darby’s Tavern. The tavern pays homage to Darby, an enslaved man who was a cook of the Bruce Family. The fireplace and cast-iron pot Darby used remain in the building, a tribute to a man who was celebrated for his culinary skills even in his lifetime.

Factory Street Brewing Company

Once a tobacco warehouse, Factory Street now stands as a staple of live events, comradery, and good times in Downtown South Boston. Several craft brews on tap pay homage to the community’s history: from the Boyd’s Ferry Stout to the River Road Irish Ale.

Bright Meadows Farm and Vineyard

Housed in a barn on a multigenerational farm, Bright Meadows Farm and Vineyard offers a variety of wine made from locally grown fruit. Vinos will also find inspired wines in their selection, such as the Rebellion Red or Burley Red.

Staunton River Battlefield State Park

The site of an engagement during the Civil War, several young men and boys from the surrounding area held off Union calvary from crossing the Staunton River Bridge. Today, the historic bridge can be crossed by foot, while observing the Confederate defensive fortifications, which are listed on the National Register.

Halifax County African American Heritage Trail

Seven sites from around the county make up this heritage trail, honoring the struggles and triumphs of the African American community. From sites pivotal in the civil rights movement to burial grounds, often overlooked history is on full display along these locations.

The Packhouse

Inspired by the community’s agrarian roots, The Packhouse celebrates the past riches of Virginia’s cash crop – tobacco. This cozy restaurant in downtown Halifax serves hearty southern breakfasts, sandwiches, soups, and salads. To top off your meal, enjoy classic desserts, just like grandma used to make.

Staunton River State Park

Following the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps was created to give young men jobs, stimulate the economy, and protect our natural resources. This led to the creation not only of our National Park System, but Virginia State Parks too. As one of the original parks in the state, Staunton River is home to original CCC architecture; from the park’s cabins (available for overnight stays) to the shelters and visitor center.

Oak Grove Bed & Breakfast

Past and future converge in this generational family farm turned bed and breakfast. Dedicated to conservation, Oak Grove sources renewable energy to minimize its footprint; so much so it’s Virginia Green Certified and has been awarded Greenest Bnb in the state. Guests can enjoy walking trails through forests and fields of the farmland.

Sunnyview Inn and Events

This Bed and Breakfast and event space has been carefully restored. Aptly named, the rooms are flooded with warm sunlight. Once home to Rufus Owen, who frequently hosted parties, visitors can still use the stone guests used to disembark from their carriage and follow the same walkway to this charming home.

Oak Tree Tavern

Over 20 years ago, this farmhouse (originally built by the Bruce family of Berry Hill) stood in ruins. Like the rest of Virginia International Raceway, the property has been restored to its former glory. Now a tavern and pub, VIR’s history is proudly displayed on its walls – from its origins in the 1950s to contemporary elites of motorsports.
