Halifax County Barn Quilt Trail
The Halifax County Barn Quilt Trail is a self-guided tour showcasing over 100 vibrant quilt blocks displayed on barns, buildings, and fences across the county. This tribute to one of America's oldest art forms offers a unique way to explore Halifax County, with pieces reflecting local history, culture, and the personalities of artists, farmers, and business owners.
Started in 2017, the trail features quilt blocks at popular local attractions. Visitors can explore the trail by car, take a 1.8-mile walking tour in Downtown Halifax, or view the trail virtually using an online map. Maps are also available at the Halifax County Visitor Center.
The trail began as a grassroots effort and has grown to include more than 100 quilt pieces, each with its own story and meaning. The first piece, "Monkey Wrench," is still displayed at Elmo Grocery. Barn quilts have a rich history, dating back 300 years, and have been used for decorative, protective, and directional purposes.
Enjoy the beauty of the Halifax County Barn Quilt Trail and explore its colorful history. Barn Quilt Trail Day is held annually in April, featuring specials and activities at select locations!
