The Downtown South Boston Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark and is one of the largest and architecturally interesting historic districts in Southside Virginia. The district is significant for its rich collection of original Victorian commercial and residential architecture and for its interesting variety of late 19th and 20th century vernacular dwellings. Gargoyles and flourishes still decorate some of the wonderful old buildings, and several old tobacco warehouses still conduct the century-old sales of tobacco each year.
