Lodging at Staunton River State Park

Description

Those who enjoy the outdoors or are looking for a rustic experience will love lodging at Staunton River State Park. The park is one of the six original state parks that opened in June 1936. It is located on 2,400 acres along the shoreline of the John H. Kerr Reservoir (also known as Buggs Island Lake), as well as the Dan and Staunton rivers. Park lodging includes two campgrounds and cabin rentals.

These historic cabins were originally built by the CCC. All cabins have kitchens and bathrooms with a shower. Cabins include rustic furniture, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, oven, dishes, cooking utensils, silverware and glassware. Cabins also have central heat and air, as well as an indoor fireplace. Furnished decks include charcoal grills, picnic tables, and fire ring. While cabins are next to the river, trees block water views, though an overlook is only a short walk away. Cabins must be rented at least 2 nights, with length of stay increased based on seasonal demand.

The park also features two campgrounds which are open from March through November. The main campground, located near the visitor center, has a variety of sites ranging from primitive to sites with RV hookups. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. There is a bathhouse, playground, and dumpster in the campground.

The equestrian campground features 13 sites with space to RVs/horse trailers. The campground also has bathhouse and pavilion. This site is reached before entering the park entrance and has several horse-friendly trails accessed from the campground.
