The Prizery

Description

The Prizery is an arts and cultural center in a 38,000-square-foot building on the National Register of Historic Places. It is part of the South Boston Historic Tobacco Warehouse District and the most architecturally significant of its 15 buildings. Renovated in 2002, the facility includes a theatre, art gallery, classrooms, and space for community events.

The Prizery hosts global performers in the 250-seat Chastain Theatre and displays art in the Robert F. Cage Art Gallery. It offers event rentals and a variety of classes, including music and art.

The building originally "prized" tobacco, pressing it into hogshead barrels weighing up to 1,000 pounds. After harvest, workers stripped fibers, packed the tobacco, and transported it by river or railroad.
