Good Times are Brewing in Downtown South Boston

Do you know what perfectly ends a day of traveling? An ice-cold craft beer. I’d maintain a craft beer perfectly ends any day – a long day at work, after floating the river, watching a race, or maybe even after your family reunion (no judgment here). If you consider yourself an amateur ale enthusiast or even a craft connoisseur, we have the place for you.

Factory Street Brewing Company is Halifax County’s latest attraction. Located in Downtown South Boston, the brewery is a short walk from the restaurants, stores, and attractions of Main Street. Offering a variety of craft brews – some staples, some seasonal – you’re sure to find one for any palate. Ales? Check. IPA’s? Check. Stouts, Porters, and Wheats? Check.

I had the pleasure of stopping by on a warm spring afternoon. The courtyard was abuzz as several families and groups of friends conversed over drinks; their chatter interrupted by the occasional thud of bean bags on a cornhole board. Upon entering, a window offers visitors a glimpse into the brewery. As I passed by, the brewmaster, Brigid paused from her work to wave at me and my friends. I proceeded into the taproom and headed to the bar. The manager, Cyndi, and her daughter, Sarah, welcomed us before taking our orders. I opted for a flight.

After choosing a table, we soaked up the atmosphere. The building – a former tobacco warehouse built in the 1920’s – has been beautifully renovated. Natural light from the window-lined walls floods the restored hardwood floors, support beams, and exposed brick walls. Paying homage to the building and community’s past, the brewery is decorated with vintage pictures of tobacco and downtown South Boston.

In addition to the taproom and brewery, the building houses event space for meetings, receptions, and entertainment. The Brewery hit the ground running when it opened its doors. Local bands and musicians are lined up for future performances, and food trucks regularly stop by on weekends to compliment your choice of beer. More plans for entertainment are in the works as COVID guidelines ease, and I personally could not be more excited.

A Czech proverb states “A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” I finished my flight and returned for a pint of Kolsch. I needed to be thoroughly sure.

Thirsty for more information about Factory Street Brewing Company? The brewery is open Thursday and Friday evenings, Saturday from 12 pm-10 pm, and Sunday from 1 pm-6 pm. Outside food is allowed, offering patrons the chance to pair beer with a meal from their favorite local restaurant.
