Rainy Day Fun

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Rain, rain, you can stay, I’m just going to shop all day! Escape the rain and spend the day shopping, browsing antique stores, boutiques, and consignment shops. You never know what treasures and collectibles you’ll discover when browsing local antique stores such as Toots Creek Antiques in Halifax or Sullivan’s Antiques in South Boston. Find gifts for loved ones in shops such as The Cozy CottageDistinct ImpressionsWisters, and Mother Cluckers. Go thrifting and discover unique finds and deals at local consignment shops such as The Peddler’s Market and Around Again. Searching for something specific? Visit our local jeweler at LeRAVe, find designer bags and shoes at McCollum-Ferrell Shoes, or find Southern-Style clothing at Belk. Hopefully after a day shopping you don’t break the bank and have to dip into your rainy-day fund!

Fun for the Whole Family

The World of Sports offers a variety of indoor activities that will entertain customers of all ages. The facility is home to a movie theater, which shows movies nightly and offers discounted matinee showings on the weekend. For the kids (or the young at heart) there’s an arcade featuring a range of new and classic games, including a prize counter to exchange those hard-earned tickets. Behind the prize counter lies a laser tag arena, a two-floor black-lit labyrinth that can host up to 20 players at a time. An indoor go-kart track, the Shockwave Speedway, provides fun for all ages and is also found within the complex. One of the main draws of the World of Sports is the bowling alley, which accommodates single, league, and family play. Last but not least, the World of Sports is home to JB’s, a restaurant and bar which serves appetizers, American entrees, and the largest craft beer selection in the county. The bar also has a pool room with a jukebox and classic arcade games. With so much available, guests can easily spend an entire day at the World of Sports enjoying various activities.

Brush Up on Your History

Use your rainy day to spend some time learning about local culture and history. The South Boston – Halifax County Museum has many permanent and temporary exhibits. View an interactive map of the county, familiarize yourself with the military history of Halifax County, or learn more about the life of Governor William M. Tuck. Visitors can relive the past in a recreation of an old-time country store. Of key historical importance is The Crossing of the Dan, designated a turning point in the American Revolution. The event was often overlooked for decades, until being promoted to a “Historical Event of National Importance” in 2013. This exhibit details the accounts of Nathaniel Greene and his men as they raced to the Dan River, beating out English forces, and making it to Virginia for backup and supplies. For more on African American history in the county, a trip to the L.E. Coleman Museum is a must. Linking African heritage, the history of the black community in Halifax County, and contemporary narratives, the museum provides engaging learning experiences so visitors may better understand the past, present, and future. Another location for history buffs is the Staunton River Battlefield State Park. The site of a civil war battle, the visitor center has exhibits about the area’s civil war involvement and wildlife and ecology of the park. Perhaps more fascinating is the Native American exhibit, which has relics and tools discovered at a nearby excavation site. Don’t let that rainy day slide by without doing something productive!

Take a Flight

When it rains, they pour. Spend your rainy afternoon in #HalifaxVA sampling flights of locally produced alcohol at our distillery, brewery, or one of our wineries. Located in Historic Downtown South Boston, Factory Street Brewing Company serves eight craft beers brewed on sight. The former tobacco warehouse is lined with windows, offering guests views of the surrounding town and courtyard. Head to Hunting Creek Vineyard, and take shelter in The Barn, the winery’s tasting room and events venue. Sample the vineyard’s wines while snacking on a cheese plate. Tour the winery and crush pad while learning about wine pairings or do a barrel preview in Hunting Creek’s wine cellar. Or visit the county’s other vineyard at Bright Meadows Farm. Located on a 19th-century tobacco farm, Bright Meadows now offers 11 different wines which can be sampled and purchased in their tasting room. Not quite a wine connoisseur? Visit Springfield Distillery, which creates spirits, including Scratch Whiskey and Beaver King Rum. Enjoy drinks in the rustic tasting room or learn more about the distilling process with a tour of the facility. Alternatively, sip a seasonal cocktail on the covered porch and listen to the rain hitting the tin roof above. After all, today’s rain is tomorrow’s whiskey.

Craft Your HeART Out

Rainy days are the perfect time to unleash your creative side! Spark your imagination with a stop at The Prizery, home of The Robert Cage Art Gallery. Rotating exhibits feature artwork by regional artists, sure to inspire your inner Picasso. Drive just outside of South Boston to the gallery namesake’s sculpture garden. From the comfort of your car, observe Cage’s Sculpture Farm, taking in these unique and eye-catching pieces. Stop by Southern Plenty for the First Flight Gallery on the second floor, where visitors can view and buy the work of local artists. While you’re there, grab a bite to eat from the eclectic cafe on the first floor. After finding inspiration throughout the town, visit Art Acoustix, a local gallery, and studio. Browse the gallery before participating in a guided paint and sip class or opt for the paint bar and create to your heart’s content.

Excited to visit some of the locations mentioned above? No need to wait for a rainy day, enjoy these activities rain or shine! Learn more about things to do in Halifax County at gohalifaxva.com!
