Day 1

STOP : HALIFAX COUNTY VISITOR CENTER

Begin your day at the Visitor Center for maps, fishing licenses, and dining ideas.
 

STOP : PROVISIONS

Stop by the Windmill Bakery to pick up bagged lunches for the river trip. This Mennonite bakery features delicious home-baked goods, sandwiches, and soups.

STOP : BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Start your journey with a hearty home-cooked breakfast at the Packhouse Cafe in the historic town of Halifax.
 
King's Bridge Landing

STOP : KING’S BRIDGE LANDING

Take a six-mile trip downstream for an excellent day of paddling. This part of the Banister River is best experienced during typical low flows, the Dan River Atlas terms “some of the best preserved batteau sluices in Virginia are in the first four miles” of the trip which is not technically demanding or hazardous with occasional Class I rapids. An abundant hardwood canopy along the shoreline provides cool shade in the summer and good habitat for wildlife watching.
 

STOP : BERRY HILL RESORT

Check into your room at the stunning Berry Hill Resort. Enjoy the gracious southern charm of one of the 92 well-appointed guest rooms. Day 2

STOP : THE BUSY BEAN

Start your day with a cup of coffee and breakfast sandwich before you head back to the waters of Halifax County.

Consisting of three rivers and two lakes spanning Halifax and Mecklenburg counties, the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway offers a paddling experience unlike anywhere else in the country. Unspoiled terrain and interesting wildlife provide a feeling of wilderness, yet the Blueway is a short drive from major metro areas and has dozens of easy access points. Whether you’re looking for a couple hours on the lake with your family, or a more challenging three-day river trek, the Blueway delivers.
