Day 1

STOP : LOOKING BACK

Begin the day with trip to the South Boston-Halifax County Museum. Exhibits include a spotlight of local figures, war memorabilia, a recreation of a country store, in addition to newly added pieces on The Crossing of the Dan and The Golden Age of Tobacco. Visitors can also learn about family and local history at museum’s Genealogy and Research Center, one of the most sophisticated in Southern Virginia.

STOP : CROSSING OF THE DAN

Head to downtown South Boston to visit the Crossing of the Dan memorial. A turning point in the American Revolutionary War, the Race to the Dan ended at the shores of the Dan River in South Boston, now marked by a monument.

STOP : LUNCH IN HISTORIC DOWNTOWN SOUTH BOSTON

Grab a bite to eat in historic Downtown South Boston, choosing between local eateries Southern Plenty, Busy Bean, or Auburnlea on Main. Weather permitting, dine outside for views of Main Street and the surrounding historic district. Then pick up a sweet treat from KJ’s.
 

STOP : ANTIQUING

After lunch, stop by Enchanted Surroundings on Main Street. Discover antique and eclectic finds such as décor, signs, furnishings, and china. You never know what you might find!
 

STOP : HISTORY ABOUND

Leave South Boston and take 360 North to Staunton River Battlefield State Park in Clover. The visitor center features exhibits on the park’s Civil War history, as well as Native American artifacts unearthed nearby. With a deeper understanding of the park’s heritage, explore confederate earthworks, view interpretive signs, or follow the Battlefield Trail to Roanoke Station.
 

STOP : HISTORIC BERRY HILL RESORT

Check in for your stay at the historic Berry Hill Resort. Choose between the well-appointed rooms of the resort or the stately suites located inside the mansion. Take an hour to relax or explore the elegant mansion before dinner.

STOP : SOUTHERN FARE AND HOSPITALITY

Have dinner on-site at Berry Hill. Start with cocktails crafted by the resident mixologist at the Parlor Bar. Then enjoy a meal at The Mansion Restaurant, serving fare inspired by the culinary traditions of the south. Or opt for the more casual Darby’s Tavern, located in the former kitchen of the family’s cook, Darby. After dinner, relax by the pool, in the sauna, or fireside before retiring for the evening.
 

Day 2

STOP : TOUR THE MANSION AND GROUNDS

Before leaving, be sure to tour the mansion and grounds. With adequate notice, staff members will show and tell the history of the mansion. Afterwards, explore the expansive grounds by the property’s walking trails, which pass a family cemetery, the ruins of enslaved quarters’, an old boxwood maze, and buildings from the resort’s past as a plantation.
